Fall Fashion Guide

Hey guys!  So I’m back at school which means less exciting adventures, but I’ll still have time to write.  September is probably the biggest month in fashion which means there is plenty to write about and so much to be excited about.  It is also a complicated time since you have to try to seamlessly transition between seasons from loose and light summer clothes to fall layers, but it is always super exciting to put boots back on.  This year, patterns are going to be the “it” trend with plaid and florals taking center stage.  The 90s are also, for better or for worse, making a comeback (hello fanny packs:) which is contributing to the raise of a sort of “ugly fashion” moment.  What ever you might think, these 5 trends are definitely emerging to be big this season, so go out, get in the know and shop (potentially?)!

  1. Western Boots, booties, and cowboy style
    • It’s time to embrace our inner cowboy as the American west is inspiring big trends this season.  Go all out with full-on cowboy boots, or create a more subtle look with popular booties.  I have a pair of white cowboy booties which I try to fearlessly wear with any kind of cute dress to create a bold and confident look.  Western-inspired fringe is a popular look now with jeans, bags and belts.  It might sound tacky, but if worn in contrast to more contemporary clothes, it can look super cool.
  2. Belt Bags (the “classy” fanny pack)
    • Probably the most controversial trend of the moment, but also the most popular (thank you Gucci).  Fanny packs have rebranded themselves to be “belt bags” because people don’t want the shame associated with owning a fanny pack (but they are nearly the same thing).  However, the concept has been upgraded to having nearly every big name designer having one this season.  They have also been made more versatile as you can now wear them cross-shouldered or literally attached to your belt or pants.
  3. Plaid, by itself or with other prints
    • I know I write about plaid and tartan a lot, but that’s because I love it!  As a total plaid guru, it has been super exciting walking into stores to see plaid everywhere.  I can totally embrasse it now with it being so big.  The classic black and grey suiting plaid is having a huge moment, but so is bright colored plaids which evoke 90s vibes and cater to a more avant-garde crowd.

  4. Big Knits
    • We’re falling quickly into fall and you know what that means: sweater weather!  This year, large oversized chunky knits are taking center stage with bright colors and patterns designed to make a statement.  Opt to stray away from the traditional cozy fall colors for something a little more happy, yet comfortable in the knit and size.
  5. Fringed and Flared Jeans
    • Skinny jeans aren’t dead, but slowly, other styles are coming onto the scene.  Fall is the perfect time to wear cute statement jeans to complete an outfit since boots don’t need to be in the picture.  Slightly flared jeans look great with booties and mules, while fringed and asymmetrical jeans pair perfectly with a fun pair of sneakers.  The amount of cool jeans style out there right now is enormous making jean shopping fun and different.

Fall Essentials #2-The perfect puffy vest

I have a bit of an obsession with vests.  Maybe it’s their ability to make a simple outfit look chic.  Or that they can layer jackets and sweaters at the same.  Or, most importantly in Minnesota, the fact that they manage to keep you warm in breezy weather without making you feel like a suffocating marshmallow.  In other words, a vest seems to serve as the perfect fall “jacket” so to say and it can close that daunting gap of “What do I wear when it isn’t above 65 degrees 0r below 40 outside”.

These days, I seem to throw on a vest almost daily which I know gets repetitive, but I just can’t think of anything more perfect to wear this time of year.  I own multiple vests in different colors and it’s easy to mix and match with both sweaters and bottom-ups.  My favorite vest is the Excursion Vest from J Crew.  They are very well insulated and the addition of gold snaps and zippers make for a nice extra touch.  The colors range from very classic and neutral to bright and fun, allowing for a pop of color in these dull and grey months ahead.  They also have a corduroy lined version available for a more outdoorsy look.  I also have a Ralph Lauren one which I bought specially for a golf tournament.  It is a stylish sporting vest that is a lot thiner than the J Crew ones.  The thinness is a bonus, but I do not believe it is as warm.

My personal favorite, a navy and white checkered J Crew vest.  Perfect to wear over solid colors.

My classic cream colored J Crew vest.  This one is great since it goes with anything.

A simple all white one!

This favorite vest of mine happens to be on sale online right now.  Visit https://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/outerwear/puffersandvests/PRDOVR~B0109/B0109.jsp and use the promo code!

Fall essentials #1-Plaid Tartan Skirt

Well, fall is pretty much here.  It’s strange, but only in the last few days have I noticed it.  The temperature is dropping, the leaves of starting to turn color and school is back in full swing.  While not all of these fall characteristics are necessarily positive, they come on the heels of a hot and smeltery summer (at least in Minnesota) meaning that I can’t wait to adorn an oversized sweater and tall boots again.  I apologize that I haven’t written frequently recently.  School has started and it seems as though I’m already being drowned in homework.  I’m going to try to write as much as a I can, but some weeks it might be hard.

As for this post, I want to continue with the wardrobe essentials series and bring it into the fall season.  I’ll write three over the course of the three fall months as I did with summer.  To start off, I wanted to showcase an item that I didn’t realize its full worth until after having bought it slightly impulsively.  I find that my plaid tartan skirt is extremely versatile and truly gives an outfit a classic look.  It might seem a little school girlish, but with a right accessories and shirt, one can look really sophisticated in it.  Also, it’s great for fall with the color scheme and material, in addition to the holiday season where tartan is everywhere in fashion.

By pairing the skirt with a bulky shirt, the look is unconventional yet modern.  It can make a statement.

Patterns on patterns!  It’s different but I don’t think that it is too busy.  A lot of people have been doing this lately, but make sure you have minimal accessories.

This is a very classic fall look, but it’s great for the start of the chilly weather. I’m wearing navy turtle neck sweater with the skirt and a fun vintage necklace.

The skirt is from Vineyard Vines along with the sweater and the checkered shirt.  The shoes are AGL flats and the shirt is from Zara.
